Rev. YangHee Christine Stopka is one of the bridge builders. She studied at New York Theological Seminary for M. Div (2002) and D. Min (2014). Rev. Stopka served as a pastor of local churches, which included the second oldest Korean Church in the United States and one of the first Methodist Churches in New England. After years of pastorate, she was called to hospital chaplaincy and finished her residency for chaplains at Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, CT where she received an award for providing excellent patient care. Currently, she serves as a chaplain at the two largest health systems in Connecticut, Yale New Haven Health Network and Hartford Health Care Network.

A personal and vulnerable narrative that reveals the difficulties of the wilderness that life often is. The essay gives readers an alternative to simply reacting to the hopelessness of the wilderness by rejoicing. This piece’s approach to rejoicing is unlike the typical approaches this season displays. It is a quiet, careful, and measured approach to seeing how God works in our dark places to reveal the light.

The author’s church is located near in the vicinity of the Sandy Hook Elementary School, scene of last year’s school shooting in Connecticut. She intentionally left her church open every day so that anyone seeking solace, to pray, or sit in the quiet could come. Members and non-members were grateful to find a place of peaceful silence.
