Marjory Zoet Bankson Biography

Marjory Zoet BanksonAs President of FAITH AT WORK since 1985, Marjory Zoet Bankson invites participants into vital relationship with God, self, community and creation. A compelling speaker, she has been the keynoter for national meetings of Presbyterians, Episcopalians, American Baptists, United Methodists, Church of the Brethren and Mennonites.

A graduate of Harvard (1961) with a Masters in American history from the University of Alaska, Marjory studied at Virginia (Episcopal) Theological Seminary after her husband retired from the U.S. Army in 1982 and was awarded an honorary doctorate from VTS in 1999.

Her latest book, Call To The Soul (Innisfree Press, 1999), presents a six-stage model for hearing God’s call at different stages of life. Her other books, Braided Streams: Esther and a Woman’s Way of Growing, Seasons of Friendship: Naomi & Ruth as a Pattern and This Is My Body... Clay, Creativity and Change are also designed for small group use. Her recent video, With Tongues of Fire (Five Women from the Book of Acts) helps viewers to make connections between their own lives and women of the first-century church.

Marjory grew up in Bellingham, Washington, graduated with a degree in government and economics from Harvard, married and taught high school history in Alaska before serving as the first women's counselor at Dartmouth College in l969-70. Between l970 and l980, Marjory worked as a professional potter and explored the classical spiritual disciplines of silence, journaling, simplicity and service. When the Banksons moved to Washington, D.C. in l976, she became a member of Church of the Saviour, an ecumenical church with a strong commitment to inner spiritual growth and outward ministry by every member. Divided into nine small congregations, each with a particular mission, Marjory belongs to The Seekers Church which is centered on advocacy for children. There she preaches frequently and teaches in the School of Christian Living.

Married almost 40 years to Peter Bankson, Director of Government Relations for  Communities-in-Schools, the Banksons make their home in Alexandria, Virginia.
