Curious Journey: The Womb by Piety Choi.
(Size: 24”x24”; Medium: Acrylic,
Oil, Graphite on Wooden Panel)

The first of a four-part abstract series titled “Curious Journey” that reflects our life journey, this painting depicts the womb. It is followed by three other pieces on birth, growth, and death. Each is constructed on the color base of blue, red, green, and black that provides the backdrop of the lines of abstraction. In this particular painting, the blue represents life, and the image depicts the prenatal gestation of protection and nurturing. I started working on this image without any preset plan or intention. While I had no idea what sort of painting it would give birth to in the end, I was led to explore the curious joining of acrylic and oil—two elements that by nature do not mix well. It was as if they were guiding my hands to find the lines and colors they needed for their birthing. Like our life journey, in which we take our steps without knowing where they lead us, these paintings perhaps illustrate how each step we take in faith will give a form and beauty to life that takes us by graceful surprise.—Piety Choi
